What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery designed to remove excess fat from certain parts of the body, such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, stomach, or arms, aiming to sculpt and redefine these areas. Liposuction is not a weight-loss solution but a method for refining and shaping the body’s contours. The procedure involves using a small tube called a cannula, which is inserted under the skin through small cuts, to vacuum out unwanted fat cells.

How Does Liposuction Work?

In liposuction surgery, a slender instrument known as a cannula is carefully guided into the target area. This tube is gently maneuvered to dislodge fat cells, which are subsequently removed from the body through a suction device. Typically, this procedure is carried out while the patient is under general anesthesia, ensuring comfort and safety.

Benefits of Liposuction

Liposuction delivers long lasting outcomes by permanently removing fat cells, ensuring they won’t reappear. This procedure enhances your physique by sculpting areas like the abdomen, thighs, or arms according to your aesthetic desires and significantly elevates your self-esteem, allowing you to feel more confident. Through liposuction, achieving the body of your dreams becomes an immediate, tangible reality, helping you attain the physique you’ve always envisioned.

Risks and Side Effects of Liposuction Treatment

Liposuction carries rare risks, including allergic reactions to anesthesia, infection, bleeding, and fluid under the skin. There may also be some temporary side effects such as swelling, numbness, and changes in skin sensation.

Is Liposuction Right For Me?

You’re an ideal candidate for liposuction if you:

  • Are a healthy adult of any age within 30% of your ideal weight
  • Have firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone
  • Do not have a life-threatening illness or medical conditions that can impair healing
  • Are non-smokers
  • Have a positive outlook and specific goals in mind for body contouring

Special considerations may be necessary for individuals with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or previous surgery to the treatment area.

What Results Should I Expect Right After Liposuction?

  • Once the procedure is completed, a compression garment or elastic bandages may cover treatment areas.
  • Initial healing will include swelling, numbness, soreness, bruising, and discomfort that can be controlled with medication.
  • Your surgeon will provide specific postoperative instructions, such as the use of garments, expected return to activity, and appropriate care of incisions, based on the technique and extent of your procedure.
  • In general, a return to light, normal activity is possible as soon as you feel ready and is encouraged to prevent blood clots and other complications.
  • Initial wound healing may take 5-10 days, at which time any sutures will be removed, if necessary.
  • Healing will continue for several weeks as the swelling continues to dissipate.
  • Incision lines will improve over time.
  • Continue to follow your surgeon’s instructions and attend follow-up visits as scheduled.
  • You will be encouraged to control your weight, as significant weight gain can reverse your results.

What Results Should I expect Over Time?

It may take several months for the swelling to fully dissipate. As it does, your new contours and enhanced self-image should continue to develop.

With a healthy and active lifestyle, you will be able to enjoy the balancing, fulfilling results of liposuction for years to come.

Before, During, and After

What to Expect Before a Liposuction Treatment

Before undergoing liposuction, there are important preparations you should be aware of to ensure a smooth procedure and optimal recovery. You will need to avoid taking certain medications, including blood thinners and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), at least one week before the surgery. Also, certain lab tests might be required to ensure your readiness for the operation. To accurately guide the procedure, the areas targeted for treatment will be meticulously outlined with circles and lines.

What to Expect During a Liposuction Treatment

During liposuction, you’ll first receive anesthesia for your comfort. Then, through small cuts on the skin, a slender tube or a cannula is carefully inserted into the body. This tube moves gently back and forth to loosen up the fat, which is then removed using a surgical vacuum or a syringe connected to the cannula. This process helps shape and contour the body by eliminating unwanted fat.

What to Expect After a Liposuction Treatment

Following your liposuction procedure the treated areas will be covered with dressings or bandages. You’ll also need to wear a compression garment or an elastic bandage to support your body as it recovers, helping to control swelling. In some cases, you might have drainage tubes inserted, so keeping track of the fluid output will be necessary. You’ll receive instructions for post-surgery care, including medications that will help heal and reduce the risk of infection, ensuring you know exactly what to expect throughout your recovery process.

KYBELLA™

KYBELLA® is an FDA-approved injectable medication designed to reduce submental fat, commonly known as a double chin. It's a non-surgical alternative to liposuction that uses synthetic deoxycholic acid—a molecule naturally found in the body that helps break down dietary fat. KYBELLA® works by destroying fat cells under the chin, leading to a noticeable reduction in fullness. Once these cells are destroyed, they can no longer store or accumulate fat, eliminating the need for further treatment after achieving your desired look.

  • Make changes to your medication regimen under the guidance of your doctor.
  • If you smoke or vape, it’s critical to quit as it can affect your recovery.

The effects of liposuction are permanent. Once the fat cells are eliminated during the procedure, they do not regenerate, offering lasting results.
